Many readers likely remember the National Film Board cartoon the Log Driver’s Waltz.

In it, a young woman sings about her desire to marry a log driver as his profession has made him a better dancer than all the wealthy men in town.

Part of the lumber-making process, the job is at it sounds. The log driver moves (or drives) logs from the forest down to rivers and pulp mills using river currents. The practice was quite popular but it died off as more railroads and logging roads (gravel roads that provide direct access to forests) were built.

As such, no one really drives logs anymore, except for in extremely remote locations. So here is a look at the log driver and nine other professions that for all intents and purposes no longer exist.
